Poetry Books and Pamphlets

Books and Pamphlets I Have Bought and Nearly Read

I have been feeling a little overwhelmed by the number of poetry books and pamphlets out there and the pressure to keep up with them both for the site and for my own learning as a poet. At the moment I don’t really have a sense of how they fit together or what I have learned from them. So I thought the first thing to do was to make a basic list of the publications I have (although there may be others scattered around the house). This isn’t a review, it is a simple list from which I hope to get a sense of how they relate to each other in terms of style and themes. I would love to hear of books/pamphlets you might think I will be interested in reading.

  1. I understand so well feeling overwhelmed! But I’m impressed you got your list in alphabetical order. I think I mentioned Graham Fulton before – I’d definitely recommend him for his sharp, observational humour. And, in a different vein, Katrina Naomi – I love her pamphlet ‘Lunch at the Elephant & Castle’ and her collection ‘The Girl with the Cactus Handshake.’ For political engagement & linguistic fireworks – ‘Whitehall Jackals’ by Chris McCabe & Jeremy Reed (Nine Arches Press). That’s just a few from a quick scan of nearby poetry books and pamphlets…

  2. Thanks very much Hilaire. Often it is only a matter of cost that stops me buying all of the books. I have yet to make a list and sit in the Poetry Library for a week or more. Peter

    1. Thanks Jenelle. I subscribe to Poetry Magazine and South Bank Poetry. I am a member of the Poetry Society so receive the Poetry Review. Then I buy on occasion a number of the others; Under the Radar, Magma, Ambit, Poetry Wales, Prole, the North, Poetry London, Brittle Star, the Interpreter’s House. Online, I read Guernica, Poems in Which, Hinterland, Clear Poetry, BODY, the Stare’s Nest, Well Versed, and Nutshells and Nuggets. Best wishes, Peter
